SPORT: (FOOTBALL) CLUBS WANT ALL VAR REFERRALS ON BIG SCREENS

By Martyn Ziegler, Chief Sports Reporter, and Gary Jacob

600 words

PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS are demanding that replays of all incidents referred to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) be shown to fans inside stadiums.

Brighton & Hove Albion have written to the Premier League with their concerns and those of other clubs, which will be raised at a meeting of the 20 club chairmen in London on November 14.

As previously revealed by The Times, the clubs will also seriously consider changing VAR policy so that referees can view pitchside monitors after a rash of controversial incidents. Under existing guidelines, replays can only be shown on big screens if VAR has overturned a decision, but not if it simply confirms the referee's first decision. If VAR awards a penalty, the replay can only be shown after the kick has been taken, which has led to further confusion about why it has been awarded.

Paul Barber, the Brighton chief executive, told The Times: "I am not criticising VAR, or the league or PGMOL [Professional Game Match Officials Limited], but the most important thing is that whatever happens, fans in the stadium need to know every minute what is going on.

"If we forget that, then we are diminishing the stadium experience and all the stakeholders in the game would agree that we have to protect that. It would be potentially quite damaging if fans started feeling they would know more about what is going on if they stayed at home."

In August, Lewis Dunk had a goal for Brighton against Southampton ruled out by the referee Kevin Friend for an offside in the build-up. The decision was checked by VAR and confirmed as being correct but for that reason the replay could not be shown on the big screen - if it had been overturned and allowed to stand then the replay could have been shown. Barber said: "There was a message on the screen that VAR is checking to see whether it is a goal, but in that situation no replay can be shown on the big screen, which is ridiculous. It was the right decision but the fans were totally confused."

Steve Parish, the Crystal Palace chairman, believes one positive of VAR is that it has stopped big clubs getting the benefit of controversial decisions at home. He claimed match officials have in the past been influenced by home fans, while the video assistant referee does not face the same pressure when reviewing an incident in a studio.

Palace had two decisions overturned in their favour away to Arsenal on Sunday. Wilfried Zaha was initially booked for simulation before the incident was reviewed and a penalty awarded, which Palace scored. Also, Calum Chambers, the Arsenal defender, was deemed to have fouled Palace's Luka Milivojevic before Sokratis scored what Arsenal thought was a winner in the 2-2 draw.

"It's the first time I have come away from stadiums playing away where the big home teams are moaning about decisions," Parish said. "The guy in the box is making the decision based on what he sees. In spite of everyone's best intentions, there are other influences when it is the referee.

"What we're looking for is clarity and certainty. With offside, you either are or you aren't, millimetres don't matter. And to me, it is the same with a foul. If the people in the box think it is a foul, then it is a foul, in the lead-up or whatever."

Parish was speaking as Palace revealed plans for a new pounds 20 million academy in Beckenham, southeast London. The club hope to obtain planning permission early next year.
